God Created Science

God vs. Science? This is a no brainer to me. God created everything. Every material, every element, every atom. Science uses materials, elements and atoms to make things happen. Therefore, God created science. Done.

However, for some reason, when it comes to fertility — specifically IVF — and mental health, people seem to struggle with this notion of “playing God”. Undergoing IVF, is no more playing God than is undergoing a knee transplant or heart surgery. Or shoot, wearing glasses. After all, those are also medical conditions corrected by science. What makes IVF or fertility assistance any different? That a life results? Well, that’s what happens when infertility is treated.

Oh, unless you forget that infertility is a medical condition.

Then, I suppose, it’s easy to separate it. But no, the 40% of male infertility factors — such as impaired sperm motility or count — and the 40% of female infertility factors — such as diminished ovarian reserve or blocked fallopian tubes — are biological. Just like that astigmatism for the glasses-wearer. And the 20% of unexplained infertility is just as biological as Type 1 Diabetes or any other ailment that one didn’t sign up for but has to deal with.

Let’s go ahead and address the small percentage of infertility that is caused by human factors and could have been prevented. Should a person with lung cancer not be treated simply because he smoked and “brought it on himself”? Of course not, that’d be ridiculous.

So we’re done with that. Or at least, we should be. I don’t want to hear any more confusion about infertility being some stand-alone no-treatment-deserved death sentence.

What About the Bible

Let’s start with the fact that every reference to children in the Bible is positive, as though having children is something to desire. So clearly children themselves aren’t the problem. Well, in the matter of fertility and conception anyway. My jury is still out on children in general. They are loud and expensive. And loud. But that’s a different post.

Now, because this is a Christian-based platform, what did Jesus himself have to say about medical interventions?

Simple.

In the book of Luke (who was a physician, by the way), Jesus explains to the Pharisees why He communes with people the Pharisees felt were unsavory sinners. Jesus’ response to them was this:

And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

Luke 5:31

In other words, healthy people don’t need doctors. Those are not well, those of the people that need doctors. This was an analogy so the Pharisees would understand Jesus’ purpose. However, the example is key. Jesus endorsed those in need of medical care, going to receive that care. This analogy is repeated again in Mark 2:17.

So. Can we dead this God vs. Science debate now? For these two simple reasons:

  • Infertility is a biological medical condition.
  • Those in need of medical attention seek help from doctors. Even Jesus said so.

Thassit.

“I don’t know what God you believe in, but MY God is all powerful and cannot be tricked by science into creating a child. If it’s not meant to be, it won’t work. If it does, you better believe He had a hand in it. I hope your God didn’t just hear you underestimate him like that!
